Wales steps closer to ending competition in healthcare

17-Jul-08

Edwina Hart
Plans to end the internal market and simplify health boards in Wales have been accepted after a 12-week consultation.

The plans are part of a commitment to end competition and privatisation in the NHS in Wales. Seven new organisations will be formed from the 22 existing local health boards.

Welsh health minister Edwina Hart said there was a widespread consensus among the 807 respondents that the plans to simplify the structure of health boards could go further, so the new health boards replace NHS trusts in Wales as well.

A national board is likely to be appointed to direct funding across Wales with the hope of ending the internal market and competition.

Ms Hart said: ‘The overwhelming view from both the responses and the consultation events was that I should go further than initially suggested. I am pleased to accept this view and will be consulting further in the autumn on the details of these proposals.’

well done wales. congratulations !

would that England do the same.

Inevitably this will save costs. They should follow by scrapping NHS direct, The National computer scheme, and Choose and Book
