The findings are based on data provided by the 391 trusts in England. Each trust stated whether they met the necessary level of performance for hygiene during the year to March 31 2008.
Of the 103 trusts failing on hygiene, 57 were PCTs.
Decontamination of equipment was a particular problem with 70 trusts failing to meet acceptable standards.
From April next year, trusts will have to meet a range of standards in order to be given a licence for business.
Trusts which fail to meet the hygiene standards on infection control, decontamination of equipment and cleanliness could be prevented from operating.

Interesting that this comes shortly after reports suggesting that PCT's may be privatised if they 'fail', whatever that means; and also that GPs premises are being deemed unfit in various ways, leading to suggestions that PCTs are perhaps using this as an excuse to shut them down and build polyclinics. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2124702/GP-'pressured'-into-polyclinics-amid-health-and-safety-claims.html
