Fertility level link to low IVF birthweight

04-Aug-08

Babies conceived through IVF are more likely to be small or premature because of their mother's underlying infertility, claim Norwegian researchers.

Worse infant outcomes occur in single births if conception was through assisted fertilisation (AF). But a study has now shown this difference is much smaller if women have conceived both naturally and through AF, suggesting the problem is due to the causes of infertility.

For the research, birthweight, gestational age, premature births and perinatal deaths in single births were compared between single births conceived naturally, conceived through AF and births to mothers who had conceived children naturally and through AF.
