As a man, and (soon-to-be-qualified) nurse, I have encountered many occasions where female patients have preferred that their personal care was provided by a woman.

Likewise I have nursed men who have valued being cared for by another man. That is entirely appropriate and there are increasing numbers of male nurses who can ensure this choice is available for patients.

There are many cultures and individuals in the UK who prefer that healthcare, particularly intimate healthcare, is provided by professionals of the same sex.

GP practices have long felt it important that women patients have the option of a female doctor, particularly for the most intimate examinations. This option should remain for men.

The issue is not one of political correctness, but of patient choice. GPs should not force patients to accept care through some misguided principle.
