GP hurt in fatal jet ski crash

09-May-08

A Bradford GP is being treated for shock after her husband died in a jet skiing accident in Australia.

Dr Sridhar Shekar, 31, a hospital doctor from Leeds, died at the scene after losing control of a jet ski the couple had hired.

His wife Dr Divya Patel, who was a passenger on the jet ski, escaped with minor injuries. She has been a GP partner at Cowgill Surgery, Bradford for four months.

She attempted first aid on her husband after the incident on the Gold Coast, but he died after suffering head and upper body injuries.

Dr Shekar was a senior house officer in rheumatology at Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

A spokesman for Bradford and Airedale Teaching PCT said: 'Both the PCT and Cowgill Surgery are saddened to learn of the tragic death of Dr Patel's husband.

'The PCT is supporting the practice and also its patients who will be gradually finding out about this sad news.

'We would like to send our sincere condolences to Dr Patel and her family at this difficult time.'
