A report out today, ‘Leading Local Change ', sets out five pledges to ensure that any proposals are rigorously tested before services are altered.
‘Our nationwide listening events have shown me that patients, the public and NHS staff are not opposed to change in principle but want to ensure it is done to save lives and improve quality and is not driven by cost or politics,' said health minister Lord Ara Darzi.
The five pledges are: change must benefit patients; it must be based on clinical evidence; it will be locally-led; the NHS will consult staff and patients; and existing services will not be withdrawn before new ones are established.
Liberal Democrat shadow health secretary Norman Lamb said: ‘No amount of desperate dressing up can conceal the fact that the forthcoming Darzi Report is set to ride roughshod over the wishes and needs of many local areas.'
BMA chairman Dr Hamish Meldrum said Darzi's principles were ‘impossible to disagree with'.

I would find believing ' petrol prices have dropped to 82p per litre' more plausible. Give us a break Mr. Darzi. Go talk to Gordon Brown for a change and tell him, if this carries on, his career is finished- and your's too.

The pulblic have NOT been consulted! My partients don't have clue about the changes and yet there would be far reaching consequences. Mr Brown says he will listen to the public now that he got hammered at the polls. Better consult properly and start listening Mr Brown.
